What is the
history of Buddhist Lent?
In the
early days of the Buddha, the Buddha had
not yet determined where his disciples
should stay during the Buddhist Lent.
However, since the rainy season was the
season when villagers worked in the
fields and rice paddies, monks who were
on pilgrimage would trample on seedlings
and small animals that came out to
forage, damaging the villagers’
fields. For this reason, the Buddha
established new disciplinary rules in
the assembly of monks, requiring monks
to stay during the Buddhist Lent for the
entire 3 months in one place.
There
are 2 types of Buddhist Lent according
to the Buddhist rules:
1. The first
Buddhist Lent, called “Purim
Phansa”, starts from the 1st
waning moon of the 8th month to the
middle of the 11th month.
2. The
second Buddhist Lent, called
“Pachim Phansa”, starts from
the 1st waning moon of the 9th month to
the middle of the 12th month for monks
who had to travel far. Or there is an
unforeseen event that prevents the first
Buddhist Lent.
