Asalha
Bucha Day or the 15th day of the waxing
moon of the 8th lunar month
Asalha
Bucha Day is considered an important day
in Buddhism because of the important
event that occurred on the 15th day of
the waxing moon of the 8th lunar month,
which is Asalha Full Moon Day or the
full moon day of Asalha month, 45 years
before the Buddhist Era at Isipatana
Deer Park, Varanasi, Magadha. It was the
day that the Buddha gave his first
sermon, the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta,
to the five ascetics.
That sermon
caused Kondanna, one of the five
ascetics, to have faith in the
Buddha's teachings until he gained
the eye of the Dhamma, which is the
attainment of the Sotapanna level of
noble persons. He therefore requested to
be ordained in the Dhamma-Vinaya of the
Buddha by the Ehi Bhikkhu Upasampada
method, making Venerable Kondanna the
first monk in the world because he
attained the Dhamma as the first person,
or the first monk. This resulted in the
completion of the Triple Gem for the
first time in the world, namely the
Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha. This
day is called "Dharma Day" or
Dharmachakra Day, which is the day the
wheel of the Buddha's Dharma turned
for the first time. "Sangha
Day" is the day the Sangha was born
for the first time. Asalha Bucha Day is
the day that the Buddha gave his first
sermon after his enlightenment.
Therefore, this day is considered the
beginning of the announcement of
Buddhism to the world that Buddhism had
come into being. It was the first day
that the Buddha announced Buddhism. And
because the Buddha was able to give his
enlightenment, it is considered that he
had become the Supremely Enlightened
Buddha. That is, the Buddha is someone
who can show what he has enlightened to
others and let them know and follow. It
is considered that he has completed his
mission of being the Buddha, the
"Samma Sambuddha". For this
reason, Asalha Bucha Day is also called
"Dharma Day". Asalha Bucha Day
is therefore held to commemorate the
anniversary of an important event in
Buddhism, so that Buddhists can remember
the teachings of the Buddha. And adhere
to the principle of
goodness
